Bryant, T he Yoga Sutras of Patañjali: a new edition, translation and commentary , ed. Ist Edition, North Point Press, 2009 practically Right after publications on SCP’s role, Gebauer and colleagues moved to field research, qualitative and quantitative survey of those who practice yoga and meditation, forming two research samples for which administered questions were going to explore their self-assessment after yoga practice along with their ability, coming from āsana and correct breathing, to increase the feeling of well-being. Ultimate aim of researchers was to test the SCP universality even outside Western cultural horizons. It may indeed be – according to researchers' question – that even the most ascetic monk is a slave to self-centeredness. To 93 yoga practitioners, all of whom were German and for a mean age of 40, have been asked specific questions in basic conditions and within one hour of activity. uestions putting them in confrontation one with each other student of the course, evaluating their narcissistic tendencies and aspiring to classify them according to their self-esteem. With a wide margin, each and every single theory of researchers had been confirmed. In fact, within one hour-lesson, they all results possessors of a higher sense of self-enhancement. For 162 meditation practitioners, all German and the average age of 40, survey went instead to explore the degree of satisfaction with their own lives and the measure of well-being in relation to the pursuit of happiness. Here too, increase in the feeling of well-being and consequent growth of self-valorization were tout-court confirmed. originally Synthesis came finally back to William James, when he argues that practicing one skill increases self-enhancement. Researchers especially wanted to understand if this apparent psychology dogma was universal. While highlighting risks that the chosen sample and the same act of researching could have carried on a possible generalization error, in the light of obtained results they concluded that the answer could not have been other than affirmative. Although not excluding alternatives, the dominance of self-centeredness seemed, as it still seems, inalienable from human nature. If, on the one hand, the research team tried to dismantle centuries of philosophy and practices respecting relationship between body and mind, on the other hand it examined the possibility that a yogic or meditative practice might really be able to rise oneself from Ego, except for a profound rethinking in those who venture for these paths of inner exploration. It seems in fact that this kind of stumbling is typical of Western practitioners, who tend to compare their technique with that of their classmates in a yoga room. Yoga and meditation are not a sport, they do not aspire to a contingent improvement, helping rather to find a position in a much wider sense from an ontological point of view. More than 2000 years ago the aforementioned Patañjali, in its fundamental yogic aphorisms 12 , preached as the āsana should have been stable and comfortable , because they are not positions to reach, but individual own abilities. If you do yoga trying to imitate postures that others join with more impetus, maybe your goal is wrong and your exercise will only have self-centered purposes. If, on the contrary, one looks for his own natural position, stumbling-risk will certainly decrease. That kind of rethinking – also preached by those Southampton and Mannheim skeptics – must then originate from this fundamental point of departure: why do I really salute the Sun? 111
